Joy in the Classroom, a Reflection on Dean's Presentation

  Would the students in your class walk away convinced that Learning is a joyful act, worthy of celebration? - Dean Shareski Joy is a Strategy       This week, I had the immense pleasure to hear a presentation by Dean Shareski who is an educator, author, and motivational speaker. I had a smile on my face as I listened to him speak. He kept me engaged throughout the entire presentation and I came away wanting to bring joy and delight into my future classroom and upcoming placement. A Reflection on Successful Remote Learning, a presentation by Shannon and Chris from MB Education

Like masks, social distancing, and Covid-19, you hear these phrases more often. I never thought in a million years that I would be complimenting someone's mask as I work in the retail industry on Saturdays. Anyways, back to the topic at hand. Remote learning has been more widely available and used by students across Canada due to the ongoing pandemic. Many teachers were just tossed into it and it was overwhelming for so many of them. Many people my age are all about social media and many people assume that I would have every single social media platform. I had Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Tik Tok, and YouTube accounts prior to taking this course.  Image Source      When I first got the twitter account, I honestly didn't know how it worked. One of my first thoughts about this platform was that it wasn't overly user friendly. I've used other social media platforms for years and I found them easy to use since I spent far too much time than I'd like to admit on them. Maybe that caused a bias in me ;). Tech x English, a Contemplation on Tyler's discussion and what it means for my Early Years Classroom

I can tell you that I read Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Fahrenheit 451, and did a unit on poetry but that's about it. In my grade 12 social studies course, I remember writing diary entries as if I were someone trying to come to Canada through the underground rail road. I can tell you that I did these things but I don't remember much about anything I read or wrote. I could google these books and tell you what google tells me about it but that would be lying which is not something that I want to do. That being said, I don't want to blame everything on my teacher's. I could have looked over the information more after the fact.  What I can say is that I don't believe that I had many authentic learning experiences si

We watched a few videos on the television (I was always so excited when this happened) however that was the extent of technology in my classroom. It wasn't until late middle school that we started to have access to more technology. Five computers were installed in each classroom and my teachers were able to book the computer lab for us a few times a week to complete technological projects/research. Nike says to, "Just do it!" Disney Land is the "Happiest place on earth!" I'm sure that even reading those slogans bring pictures to your mind. With Walmart, I can picture how my local store is laid out and associate Walmart with the colour blue. When I hear Nike's saying, I picture the running shoes my sister wears and think about my exercise routine. When I think of Disney Land, I can picture the Sleeping Beauty Castle and Minnie and Mickey waving at everyone as they pass by. These images are in my head for a reason; because I have seen commercials and have seen signs for these places throughout my travels. A Broader View on Digital Citizenship and what it means for Me.

I promise, that quote was written at the top of my blog on purpose. When we think about the word fair trade, we often associate it with food. Although that is true, there is a lot more to fair trade than just food. Here in Canada, we have stores called Ten Thousand Villages which sells fair trade items such as jewelry and pottery. I work at Portage MCC on Saturday's which sells fair trade jewelry, chocolate, and coffee. I am sure that there are many businesses that sell fair trade however I want to shift my focus to something that
