An Educational Podcast I look forward to using in My Classroom (TT#7)

“The medium of podcasting and the personal nature of it, the relationship you build with your listeners and the relationship they have with you—they could be just sitting there, chuckling and listening…there’s nothing like that.”

Growing up, I remember reading books and books          about animals. I loved learning specifically about            dogs,   dolphins, and penguins. Fast forward to 2021,      children have access to research through a variety of        platforms. They can read books, watch YouTube              video, ask Alexa a question, google it, or listen to a          podcast. I would like to focus specifically on the last        medium I discussed. Podcasts have become                      increasingly popular in the past 15 years or so with the    invention of the smart phone. On smart phones and          tablets, a podcast app is automatically on your device.      Podcasts vary in topics from how to cook a meal, to        ethical issues, to social justice education. Podcasts are    increasingly becoming popular in our primary school      system too. Podcasts and audio books are used by            students for a variety of reasons. They can be beneficial for students who don't enjoy reading or who would benefit from hearing proper expression while hearing someone speak. There are many educational podcasts for students to use to find information out in a fun and interactive way. I am sure that there are many good podcasts, but for the purposes of this blog, I will only review one.

I was able to listen to a few different podcasts and the one I would like to specifically talk about a podcast entitled Short and Curley. This podcast is hosted by Carl Smith and Molly Daniel with inputs from kids and other special guests. They also have a website that has classroom resources for teachers in multiple formats so that you can use them in the classroom. According to their website which is linked above they generally talk about ethical issues over a variety of topics. I specifically listened to two episodes. The first one was entitled Who Owns the Forest? It follows Carl and Molly on an adventure through the Amazon Rain Forest. They are looking for a flower native to the Amazon Rainforest that is rumored to smell good. Along the way, they discuss more about the Rain Forest and the Issues that arise between different people groups ideas of how it should be used. They run into a group of school students and ask their thought's on the matter. It had me laughing and I appreciated the engaging questions that were asked throughout the podcasts. They were open ended which takes the pressure away from the students about getting the wrong answer or not. The second episode I listened to was entitled Should robots replace humans? I thought that it was relevant to what we have been discussing in my internet for educators class. This podcast had the hosts discussing whether or not it was good to have drone's help deliver mail or bring us our fast food orders to our house. They talked about how it would take away jobs and how that can be both a good and bad thing for our economy. Again, this episode had opinions from students on both sides of the matter. A few more titles that sounded interesting were Do you always have to keep a secret? and Are you the boss of your emotions? Below you will find my opinion about the pros and cons of the podcast itself.

👍Pros-
  • Sound effects are amazing
  • Touch on ethical issues and use child friendly language to engage their audience
  • Different people speak which also relates to engagement
  • They have intentional places to pause and allow you to have a discussion around a question they pose
  • They have children's opinions of the subject featured in the podcast
  • Share both sides of the issue being discussed
👎Cons-
  • Sometimes the accents make it difficult to understand the hosts
  • In my opinion, their intro is not engaging
If this podcast sounds interesting to you, I'd encourage you to listen to a few of the episodes. If you choose to listen, let me know what you think in the comments. Thanks for reading!
